WHEN ROGER MAYWEATHER SPEAKS, WHO LISTENS?
BY STEPHEN S. JOHNSON

(IB-February 28, 2010) Roger Mayweather, brother of Floyd Mayweather, Sr. and uncle of Floyd, Jr. continues to provide comedic relief for boxing fans.

The no longer controversial but now seemingly attention grabbing former world champion Mayweather offers very little proof in ridiculous statements he makes.

The innuendos and assumptions he boldly asserts as fact will be the downfall of he and others named in the still pending defamation lawsuit filed by Manny Pacquiao.

Somewhere along the way, one would perceive attorneys or even loved ones attempting to muzzle anyone named in the pending defamation lawsuit. If such an attempt has been made it has failed miserably and the case will be declared a unanimous decision in favor of Manny Pacquiao.

The issue with Roger Mayweather now comes with the infatuation some media outlets feel his absurd, irrational and rambling comments deserve. Mayweather offers very little in viable proof of anything remotely considered as valuable, yet he still garners sufficient attraction allowing him to say...nothing!

Offering important information or providing relevant facts regarding anything vital to the continued progression of the sport of boxing is something Roger Mayweather never concerns himself with.

The now 48 years old Roger Mayweather is widely recognized as one of the most competitive fighters in the super featherweight (130) to welterweight (147) divisions during his 18 year professional career.

With an impressive amateur boxing record of 64-4, the next in line of the fighting Mayweather family would turn pro and immediately make an impact on the sport by not only winning, but impressively either knocking his opponents out or forcing them to quit.

Roger Mayweather, who won 9 world titles in 4 different weight classes, fought some of the most familiar names in boxing such as Sammy Serrano, Rocky Lockridge, Julio Cesar Chavez, Pernell Whitaker, Rafael Pineda, Livingstone Bramble and Kostya Tszyu.

Defeating Serrano and Bramble by TKO when both were in their prime is a reminder of just how prominent the name Roger Mayweather was during his boxing days.

Having proclaimed himself "The black mamba" (after the deadly African snake) Roger Mayweather was more commonly referred to as the "Mexican assassin" by most media types because of his ability to destroy a number of the abundant Mexican fighters that populated the 126 to 140 pound divisions.

Roger Mayweather himself never appeared to embrace the rather derogatory name, but lived up to it.

During his fighting career Roger Mayweather was never much for words, preferring to instead let his fists do the talking. But apparently the lure of the bright lights and love of the ever "searching for a quote" media has seemingly allowed the never before seen Roger Mayweather to evolve.

The now irrelevant, mis-information spewing, and totally non-fact based commentaries revealed by Roger Mayweather make him some sort of Ben Stein in the eyes of some. When in actuality he is nothing more than another in the ever increasingly long line of media buffoons.

The truth of the matter is that Roger Mayweather has become so self absorbed, he has become a menace not only to society, but himself. A fact that should sadden his many boxing fans.

Very soon the career of his nephew Floyd, Jr. will come to an end and Roger Mayweather will be left to ponder his next verbal assault against some self described world inequity.

The problem will then be few (if any) media outlets will care to be entertained by the mumbling and often  incoherent Roger Mayweather. His time in the spotlight, as his own boxing career, will have faded.

This is when the thoughts of Roger Mayweather may be truly insightful and maybe even pertinent.

But by then who will listen...or even care?
