Another Thriller, Makondo Beats Muvud For WBF Title

(June 23, 2023) – In a highly anticipated rematch of what was one of the best World Boxing Federation (WBF) title fights of last year, Junior Makondo and Jacques Muvud squared off again on Friday night, June 23, at Meropa Casino in Limpopo, South Africa.

With the vacant WBF Intercontinental Super Welterweight title at stake, it was a chance for both men to settle unfinished business after their original encounter had ended in a draw, after a fight both men felt they deserved to win.

And the sequel was every bit as thrilling and action-packed as the first encounter, with both men throwing everything but the kitchen sink at each other. Both took what the other had to give, and then gave right back.

However, Junior Makondo was just a little sharper and active that Muvud, and after twelve scintillating rounds he was declared the winner by unanimous decision.

Judges Mike Phiri and Pumeza Zinakile both had it 117-111, while judge Elroy Marshall saw it a bit closer at 116-112.

The new WBF Intercontinental Super Welterweight champion, Junior Makondo, improved his professional record to 9-6-1 (7). Muvud, originally from D. R. Congo but based in South Africa, drops to 7-3-1 (4).

The fight topped a bill staged by Limpopo Champs Boxing Promotions.
